Cragsmoor House

The Cragsmoor House is located on a nine acre property overlooking the hills and mountains of the Hudson Valley.The design is embedded in a stand of trees that open toward the north and west to reveal dramatic views and abundant light. The designs explore different ways of inhabiting a cabin in the woods from more linear arrangements of rooms that draw in light and air to more centralized schemes that create a more vibrant living center to the home.

The house is organized around a central concept of a “wall in the woods” that introduce materiality, texture, and solidity to the home. The imagery captured here depicts the early design schemes and formal explorations.

This form of the house responds to the northern and western views that occur with the natural openings in the forest.

The work area, farthest from the bathroom, is generous enough for a simple couch and a custom desk assembled from simple oak planes that bob and weave around existing radiators and window sills.The shelving screen possesses openings at a variety of scales to afford visibility, privacy and the selective display of artifacts, books and plants.
