Parachute Pavilion Competition

Public spaces should be bullies (sometimes). Just as a home is humane and embracing, a public building needs to be tough and have backbone to signal its usefulness to all.

The Parachute Pavilion is an iconic and historic part of Coney Island that is the landmark that today identifies a minor league baseball stadium and major pedestrian pier. The new facility encourages performance and art while embracing the vitality and movement of the boardwalk and pier. With the now defunct parachute pavilion acting as one of the symbols of Coney Island’s vertical landscape, the design seeks to draw people upwards to view the stadium, boardwalk, and water beyond. A new boardwalk runs atop building forming a brise-soleil to shade interior and exterior gallery spaces showcasing the many local artists and cultures that populate Coney Island. The building was purposely designed with few thin or delicate elements – acting as a counterpoint to the delicacy of the parachute pavilion and boardwalk and ensuring a long life.
